Camping is great recreation and a fun way to enjoy time with friends, family and nature. The great outdoors has a way of bringing people together away from the hassles and stress of the city.
However, if you are not well prepared for your camping and hiking adventure, you can leave yourself open to all kinds of discomfort and danger. Make sure you have put some thought into your camping trip and make yourself a check list so you don't forget anything. Here are some ideas to help you have a safer, more enjoyable camping and hiking trip.
Once you know where you are going camping, check conditions. What will the weather be like? Are there dry conditions that would restrict campfires? What about wildlife? You will want to know what kind of outdoor roommates you will have, like bears or wildcats.
You will want to take dress according to the weather conditions. You will also want to make sure that your tents, sleeping bags, etc. are going to be appropriate for the conditions. You don't want a spoiled trip because you weren't warm enough while you tried to sleep. In some wooded areas it can even be cold during summer nights, so be prepared. Also, prepare yourself for rain by taking along the right clothing and waterproof supplies.
Make sure to take plenty of consumables; food for meals and snacks, water and sodas, etc. Somehow, food tastes better outdoors, especially with a group of people all sharing a meal, so your appetite is likely to be hearty.
Take plenty of suntan lotion, insect repellant, first aid supplies, lighting (flashlights, lanterns), cooking utensils, water proof matches, rope, flares, toilet paper, towels, wash rags and such.
Other basic supplies you will need are ice chests, shovels, etc. For maximum comfort you can also take along cots, air mattresses, propane stoves, portable toilets, even portable showers and more.
So, put some thought into before you go camping. Make and double check your list before you go. as you see, you will not want to just run out the door and go camping. Make yourself a list and always check it before you go. You'll have a lot more fun.
